At Weston Shore Infant School and Weston Park Primary School we believe Physical Education and Sport play an important role in making our vision statement a reality for every pupil, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better.
As well as the obvious health benefits in PE, our children also learn to develop the qualities of discipline, resilience, communication, team work, and ambition, leading to improved concentration, attitude, and academic achievement.
The teaching of PE at our schools is split into 2 parts: Real PE and Wider Sport.
REAL PE CORE/GYM/DANCE (1 hour per week) taught by sports coach:
Real PE is, first and foremost, a philosophy and approach that aims to transform how PE is taught in order to include, challenge and support EVERY child.
It is a progressive essential skills scheme of work which develops the 12 fundamental skills needed to gain physical and sporting mastery across the six key dimensions of: creative, cognitive, physical, health & fitness, social and personal.
Wider Sports (1 hour per week) Taught by class teacher:
This covers all of the other areas of PE covered in the National Curriculum, including: invasion games, athletics, net and wall games and striking and fielding games.
Children use the fundamental skills developed in Real PE within all these traditional aspects of PE.
Swimming is taught for the whole of Year 5 with each class getting a week of intensive tuition. This is so that children can learn to swim properly. The children attend a local swimming pool where specialist swimming teachers take the lessons.

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. This is at the heart of our curriculum and we want our children to make safe choices and develop a deep spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. We actively look for links to this.
We also teach P4C, Philosophy for Children, and we want our children to have the chance to discuss and debate in an open-minded manner.
